Complete Guide to Renting a Boat in Mykonos 2026

Everything we wish someone had told us before our first day at sea in the Cyclades.

Types of boats available

In Mykonos you'll mainly choose between four formats: shared catamaran cruises, private RIB speedboats, monohull sailing yachts and motor yachts. Catamarans are the most stable and family-friendly. RIBs are fast, fun and great for hopping between beaches. Sailing yachts give you the classic Aegean experience, while motor yachts are best for longer distances or extra comfort.

If it's your first time, a shared catamaran day trip is the best value — you get a crew, lunch, drinks and 7+ hours at sea for a fraction of the private price.

How much does it cost?

  • Shared catamaran day trip: €90–€120 per person.
  • Sunset cruise (3–4h): €70–€100 per person.
  • Private RIB (half day): €600–€900 for the boat.
  • Private yacht charter (full day): €1,200–€3,500+.

Prices peak in July–August. Booking 1–2 months ahead can save 15–20% and locks in the best boats.

Do you need a license?

For all crewed tours and charters — no. The captain is included. Self-drive small boats (under 30hp) can be rented without a license, but they're limited to short coastal trips and aren't ideal for reaching Delos or Rhenia. For anything bigger, a valid skipper's license is required.

Best time to go

The boat season runs from late April to mid-October. June and September are the sweet spots — warm sea, long daylight, and less wind than the peak Meltemi months of July–August. If you only have August, pick a catamaran (more stable) over a smaller boat.

What to bring

  • • Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50)
  • • A light layer for the wind on the way back
  • • Cash for tips and beach tavernas
  • • A waterproof bag for your phone
  • • Motion-sickness pills if you're sensitive — the Meltemi can pick up after lunch

Tips from locals

  1. Book the earliest departure you can — afternoons get windier.
  2. Sit at the back of the catamaran on the way out, at the front on the way back.
  3. Always ask if Delos archaeological access is included or just the swim stop at Rhenia.
  4. For sunset cruises, choose a westbound route — east-facing boats miss the show.
  5. If you're prone to seasickness, avoid private RIBs in August.
